Notice periods since February 2025

Open-ended contractEmployee resignsEmployer terminates
Wage paid monthly30 days60 days
Wage not paid monthly30 days30 days
Before 19 February 2025 (monthly wage)60 days60 days

Termination must be by written notice and for a valid reason. The party that does not observe the notice period pays the other compensation equal to the worker's actual wage for the notice period, unless they agreed on more (Article 76).

Example: actual wage SAR 12,000 paid monthly, and the employer ends the contract immediately. Notice period 60 days; daily wage 12,000 ÷ 30 = SAR 400. Notice pay = 60 × 400 = SAR 24,000. If the employer gave 20 days and then ended the contract, it owes 40 × 400 = SAR 16,000 for the part not observed. If the employee walks out immediately, the employee owes the employer 30 × 400 = SAR 12,000.

Notice pay comes on top of your end-of-service award and unused leave — add them up in the final settlement calculator. If the termination had no valid reason, see Article 77 compensation. Prefer Arabic? Use the Arabic version.

Frequently asked questions

Did the notice period in Saudi Arabia change in 2025?

Yes. Before 19 February 2025 the notice period was 60 days for both sides if the wage was paid monthly. Since the amendment of Article 75 it is 30 days when the employee ends the contract and 60 days when the employer does, and it remains 30 days for both sides if the wage is not paid monthly.

What wage is notice pay based on?

Article 76 obliges the party that did not observe the notice to pay the other an amount equal to the employee's wage for the notice period, unless they agreed on more. Under the Labour Law the wage means the actual wage: basic salary plus fixed allowances.

Does the notice period apply to fixed-term contracts?

No. Article 75 covers open-ended contracts. In a fixed-term contract, early termination by the employer without a valid reason falls under Article 77, and an employee's resignation is accepted 30 days after submission, which the employer may defer for up to 60 days.

My employer gave me only part of the notice — how much am I owed?

The text says "the employee's wage for the notice period", and common practice is to pay only for the part not served. The calculator shows both amounts for comparison.

Can notice pay be combined with Article 77 compensation?

This is not settled. Some law firms consider that only one is awarded, while others combine them. Do not assume they add up automatically; claim each separately.
