How the Saudi end-of-service award is calculated
| Service | Full award (Article 84) | On resignation (Article 85) |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 2 years | Half a month per year | Nothing |
| 2 to 5 years | Half a month per year | One third |
| More than 5, under 10 years | Half a month for each of the first 5, then a full month | Two thirds |
| 10 years or more | Half a month for each of the first 5, then a full month | Full award |
Example: last wage SAR 9,000 and 8 years of service. First five years: 5 × 4,500 = 22,500. Three more years: 3 × 9,000 = 27,000. Full award: SAR 49,500. On resignation (more than five years): two thirds = SAR 33,000.
The award is calculated on the last actual wage: basic salary plus fixed allowances such as housing and transport (Article 2 of the Labour Law). Part years count pro rata.

Exceptions: full award despite resigning (Article 87)
- Leaving work because of force majeure beyond the worker's control.
- A female worker ending her contract within six months of marriage or three months of giving birth.
When is the award lost?
If the employer terminates the contract for one of the Article 80 cases, such as assaulting the employer or a manager, a serious breach of obligations, or unexcused absence of more than 30 separate days or 15 consecutive days in a year after written warning. The worker may challenge this before the labour court, and the employer must prove the reason. See Article 80, and for leaving without notice because of the employer's breach, Article 81, which keeps the full award.
Saudi Arabia vs. the UAE
In the UAE the gratuity is calculated on basic salary, in days (21, then 30 a year), and is not reduced on resignation. In Saudi Arabia it is calculated on the actual wage, in months (half, then a full month), and is cut to a third or two thirds on resignation before ten years. Compare with the UAE gratuity calculator, and add your leave cash and notice pay with the final settlement calculator.

Common cases
Frequently asked questions
How is end of service calculated in Saudi Arabia?
Half a month's wage for each of the first five years of service and a full month's wage for each year after that, based on the last actual wage (basic salary plus fixed allowances such as housing and transport). Part years count pro rata (Article 84).
How much do I get if I resign?
Nothing before two years of service, one third of the award from two to five years, two thirds from more than five to under ten years, and the full award after ten years (Article 85).
Do the resignation fractions apply to open-ended contracts after the 2025 amendments?
Since 19 February 2025 the law treats resignation as a fixed-term contract matter, and an employee on an open-ended contract ends it by notice under Article 75. Several practitioners argue such an employee is owed the full award, but there is no published ministry position or court principle yet, so the calculator shows the cautious figure and the full amount.
When is the full award paid despite resignation?
When a female employee resigns within six months of marriage or three months of childbirth, when the employee leaves due to force majeure (Article 87), or leaves under one of the Article 81 cases such as the employer's breach of contract.
When is no award due?
When the employer terminates the contract for one of the Article 80 cases, after giving the employee a chance to object, or when the contract ends during probation.
