Who pays what?
- Employer: the expat levy, the work permit fee, the worker's iqama fee and renewal, and their late fines (Article 40 of the Labor Law). These may not be charged to the worker.
- Head of family: the dependent fee, the iqama fee for any family member with their own iqama, and the family's exit and re-entry visas.
Example: wife and 3 children for 12 months: 4 × 400 × 12 = SAR 19,200 (SAR 4,800 for 3 months). The worker's own renewal for 12 months with more expats than Saudis: 9,600 + 100 + 650 = SAR 10,350, paid by the employer.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the dependent fee in Saudi Arabia in 2026?
SAR 400 per dependent per month, or SAR 4,800 a year, the rate in force since 1 July 2020. It is paid in advance for the same period as the head of family's iqama renewal: SAR 1,200 per person for 3 months, 2,400 for 6, 3,600 for 9 and 4,800 for 12.
Has the dependent fee changed?
No decision changing the SAR 400 rate had been issued by November 2026. The Ministry of Finance said in 2024 that the fee was under review, but no change has been announced.
Does the employer pay the dependent fee?
The law does not require it. Article 40 of the Labor Law makes the employer pay the worker's own iqama and work permit fees, their renewal and late fines, but it does not cover the family. The dependent fee is paid by the head of family unless the contract says otherwise.
Is the dependent fee refunded on final exit?
No. It is paid in advance and is not refundable, and the fee must be paid up to the date of the final exit request.
What is the fine for late iqama renewal?
If the iqama is not renewed within 3 days of expiry: SAR 500 the first time, SAR 1,000 the second time, and deportation the third time. The fine for the worker's own iqama is paid by the employer under Article 40.
Can I renew the iqama for only 3 months?
Yes. Since November 2021 a private-sector worker's iqama and work permit can be renewed for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months, and the dependent fee is paid for the same period.
