Notice rules in the UAE

Example: basic AED 10,000 and allowances AED 5,000, a 60-day notice period, and the employer ends the contract immediately.

Daily wage = 15,000 ÷ 30 = AED 500. Notice pay = 60 × 500 = AED 30,000, owed by the employer on top of gratuity and unused leave.

Add your gratuity and leave in the final settlement calculator. Prefer Arabic? Use the Arabic version.

Frequently asked questions

Is notice pay calculated on basic or gross salary in the UAE?

On the last wage the worker received, and Article 1 defines the wage as the basic wage plus allowances. So notice pay is calculated on gross pay, not on basic salary alone, unlike end-of-service gratuity.

How long is the notice period in the UAE?

The employment contract sets it, but it may not be less than 30 days or more than 90 days, and it applies to both sides: the employer when terminating and the employee when resigning.

Am I paid during the notice period?

Yes. You receive your full wage at your last rate for the notice days you work. Notice pay is only due for days that are not served.

Do I get time off to look for work during notice?

If the employer ended the contract, you may take one unpaid working day a week to look for work, choosing the day and telling the employer at least 3 days in advance. This does not apply when you resign.

I resigned and left before the notice ended — what do I owe?

You must pay the employer notice pay equal to your wage for the rest of the notice period, even if the employer suffered no loss.

What notice applies during probation?

The employer must give at least 14 days. An employee moving to another employer in the UAE must give at least one month, and the new employer compensates the original one for recruitment costs unless agreed otherwise. An employee leaving the UAE must give 14 days. Whoever breaks the notice pays the wage for the period or the part left.
