How sick leave works under the Saudi Labour Law
Article 117 gives a worker whose illness is proven paid sick leave within one year, counted from the first day of sick leave, in three tiers totalling 120 days. Pay is based on the actual wage: basic salary plus fixed allowances such as housing and transport.
Sick leave tiers in Saudi Arabia
| Days in the sick-leave year | Pay |
|---|---|
| First 30 days | Full pay |
| Next 60 days | Three-quarters pay |
| Following 30 days | Unpaid |
Example: actual wage SAR 9,000 and 45 sick days. Daily wage = SAR 300.
30 days on full pay = SAR 9,000; 15 days at three-quarters = 15 × 225 = SAR 3,375.
Sick pay = SAR 12,375 against SAR 13,500 of normal pay, a deduction of SAR 1,125.
How it differs from the UAE
Saudi Arabia starts the year from the first sick day and pays the second tier at three-quarters of the actual wage, while the UAE gives 90 days for each year of service after probation (15 on full pay and 30 on half pay). Compare in the UAE sick leave calculator.

Frequently asked questions
When does the sick-leave year start?
From the date of your first sick leave — not from 1 January or your joining date. If your first sick leave was on 10 March 2026, the year ends on 9 March 2027, and the first sick leave after that opens a new year with a full balance.
What wage is sick pay based on in Saudi Arabia?
The actual wage — basic salary plus fixed allowances such as housing and transport — because Article 2 of the Labour Law gives "wage" the meaning of the actual wage wherever it appears.
Do I get paid sick leave during probation?
The text sets no service requirement and does not exclude probation. Sick days are not counted as part of probation, which is extended by the same period within the limits the law allows.
Are separate sick days added together?
Yes. Article 117 counts days whether consecutive or separate within the same sick-leave year.
Did Article 117 change in the 2025 amendments?
No. The Labour Law amendments in force since 19 February 2025 did not touch Article 117, so the tiers are still 30, 60 and 30 days.
What if I work elsewhere while on sick leave?
Article 118 allows the employer to withhold your pay for the leave period or recover what it paid you.
