How gratuity works in Qatar

Example: basic salary QAR 10,000 and 3.5 years of service. Daily wage 10,000 ÷ 30 = 333.33. Days: 21 × 3.5 = 73.5. Gratuity: QAR 24,500, whether the worker resigns or the employer ends the contract.

Article 54 of Qatar's Labour Law 14 of 2004 sets the gratuity at an amount agreed by the parties, but not less than three weeks' wage for each year of service, for anyone who has completed a year or more.

When is the gratuity lost?

When the worker is dismissed without notice for one of the ten cases in Article 61, including submitting forged documents, an error causing serious loss, disclosing the company's secrets, assaulting the employer, or unexcused absence of more than 7 consecutive days or 15 separate days in a year. A worker who leaves because the employer breached its obligations (Article 51) keeps the full gratuity.

Will the system change?

Prime Minister's Decision 34 of 2025 set up a committee to study a savings scheme for non-Qataris' end-of-service benefits, but no scheme is in force yet, so the Article 54 method still applies. We will update the calculator as soon as any change is issued.

Frequently asked questions

How is end of service calculated in Qatar?

The law sets no cap. The contract may provide a higher gratuity, but not a lower one.

Is Qatar replacing gratuity with a savings scheme?

Prime Minister's Decision No. 34 of 2025 formed a committee to study a savings scheme for non-Qatari workers' end-of-service benefits, but no scheme is in force yet, so Article 54 still applies.
