How the instalment is calculated

The calculator uses the reducing-balance method at the annual percentage rate, the standard method in bank finance. The rate advertised in offers is usually the APR including fees, and that is the figure to compare.

Example: SAR 100,000 of finance at 7% over 60 months on a salary of SAR 9,000.

Instalment ≈ SAR 1,980. Total cost ≈ SAR 118,800. The deduction ratio is 22%, under the 33% limit, so the finance complies.

Deduction limits

SAMA's instructions require banks to keep total monthly instalments within 33% of an employee's salary and 25% of a retiree's. The aim is to protect customers from default, so all existing obligations count towards the ratio, including the minimum payment on credit cards. For home finance, use the Saudi mortgage calculator. Frequently asked questions

How much of my salary can go on instalments in Saudi Arabia?

Total monthly instalments may not exceed 33% of an employee's salary or 25% of a retiree's, under SAMA's consumer finance rules. Home finance has higher limits set by income.

What is the difference between APR and the profit rate?

The annual percentage rate (APR) includes the profit and all admin fees and insurance, so it is the right figure for comparing banks. The calculator works out the instalment on a reducing balance at the rate you enter.

What is the maximum term for personal finance?

Banks commonly offer up to 60 months, and some finance companies offer different terms. Check the bank's offer.

Can I repay early?

Yes. The rules cap what can be charged on early repayment of consumer finance at a maximum of three months' future profit.
