Frequently asked questions
How long is probation in the UAE?
No more than 6 months from the start date (Article 9 of Decree-Law 33 of 2021). The employer may end the contract during probation with at least 14 days' written notice.
How long is probation in Saudi Arabia after the 2025 amendments?
No more than 180 days in total in all cases, and it must be stated expressly in the employment contract with its length. Before the amendment it was 90 days, extendable by written agreement to 180.
Am I owed an end-of-service award if I'm let go during probation?
In Saudi Arabia, neither party owes compensation and no end-of-service award is due for the probation period. In the UAE, gratuity is not due before one year of service anyway, and probation cannot exceed 6 months.
Can probation be repeated?
In Saudi Arabia an employee may not be put on probation more than once with the same employer, unless agreed in writing for a different job, or six months after the previous relationship ended.
Which days are not counted in Saudi probation?
The previous text excluded the two Eid holidays and sick leave. Since the 2025 amendment, Article 53 leaves the excluded leave to the executive regulations, so check them and enter the number of days in the calculator.
