Percentage rules
| What | Method | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Percent of an amount | Amount × percent ÷ 100 | 15% of 2,400 = 360 |
| One number as a percent of another | Part ÷ whole × 100 | 45 of 60 = 75% |
| Percentage change | (New − old) ÷ old × 100 | 80 to 100 = +25% |
| After a discount | Price × (1 − percent ÷ 100) | 500 with 30% off = 350 |
| After adding | Price × (1 + percent ÷ 100) | 200 + 15% VAT = 230 |
| Price before adding | Final price ÷ (1 + percent ÷ 100) | 230 ÷ 1.15 = 200 |
Note that an increase and a decrease by the same percentage do not bring you back to the start: 100 up 25% is 125, and 25% off that gives 93.75. For VAT there is a dedicated VAT calculator, and for pay rises the salary increase calculator. Prefer Arabic? Use the Arabic version.
Frequently asked questions
How do I work out a percentage of an amount?
Multiply the amount by the percentage and divide by 100. Example: 15% of 2,400 = 2,400 × 15 ÷ 100 = 360.
How do I find what percentage one number is of another?
Divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. Example: 45 out of 60 = 45 ÷ 60 × 100 = 75%.
How do I work out a percentage increase or decrease?
Subtract the old value from the new one, divide the difference by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 is a 25% increase; from 100 to 80 is a 20% decrease.
How do I work out the price after a discount?
Multiply the price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). A price of 500 with 30% off = 500 × 0.70 = 350, a saving of 150.
Is 20% off then 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The second discount applies to the price after the first: 100 × 0.8 × 0.9 = 72, a total discount of 28%, not 30%.
