The difference between Hijri and Gregorian age

The Gregorian year is solar, 365.25 days, and the Hijri year is lunar, 354.37 days. The gap of about 11 days a year adds up to a full year roughly every 33 years, so someone who is 33 in Gregorian years has completed 34 Hijri years.

The calculator uses the Umm al-Qura calendar to convert the date of birth, and works out the Hijri age from the actual number of days lived divided by the length of the lunar year.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Hijri age higher than my Gregorian age?

Because the Hijri year is lunar, about 354 days, roughly eleven days shorter than the Gregorian year. Every 33 Gregorian years are therefore about 34 Hijri years.

Which Hijri calendar does the calculator use?

The Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar for government transactions in Saudi Arabia. It may differ by a day from the actual moon sighting in some months.

How do I find my Hijri date of birth?

Enter your Gregorian date and the calculator converts it to Hijri with the Umm al-Qura calendar. For official documents, use the date on your birth certificate or ID.

Is the birthday itself counted in the age?

Age here is the difference between the date of birth and today, so the day of birth is not counted as a completed day, which is the method used in official calculations.
