Frequently asked questions
What is the Umm al-Qura calendar?
An arithmetical Hijri calendar adopted by Saudi Arabia for official dealings. It fixes the start of each month in advance using astronomical calculations, and this tool uses it in both directions.
Why is a date sometimes one day off the official announcement?
The start of Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijjah is announced by moon sighting, which can differ from Umm al-Qura by a day. For religious dates follow the official announcement; for transactions and contracts use the calendar.
How many days are in a Hijri month?
29 or 30. The tool shows the length of the month you entered according to Umm al-Qura, and warns you if you enter day 30 in a 29-day month.
How does a Hijri year compare with a Gregorian year?
A Hijri year has about 354 or 355 days, roughly 11 days shorter than a Gregorian year, so every 33 Gregorian years are close to 34 Hijri years.
Can I use it for iqama and contract dates?
Yes, for converting between the two calendars. If an official document shows both dates, the date written on it is the one that counts.
