Overtime rules in Bahrain
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Normal hours | 8 a day unless agreed otherwise, and 48 a week (Article 51) |
| Ramadan | 6 a day or 36 a week for Muslim workers |
| Daily limit | 10 actual hours including overtime, within an 11-hour span (Article 53) |
| Overtime | Pay + 25% by day, + 50% at night between 7 pm and 7 am (Article 54) |
| Rest day | Pay + 150% or a substitute day, at the worker's choice (Article 57) |
| Public holidays | As for the rest day: + 150% or a substitute day (Article 64) |
| Excluded | The employer's authorised agents, preparatory work, and guards and cleaners by decision (Article 56) |
Example: A wage of BHD 6,000 with no allowances, so the hourly wage is 6,000 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 = BHD 25. Ten daytime hours: 10 × 25 × 1.25 = 312.500; four rest-day hours with the worker choosing pay: 4 × 25 × 2.5 = 250. Total BHD 562.500.
The law says "the wage due" without limiting it to basic pay, and defines wage as everything the worker receives for the work, so we assume total pay. End-of-service gratuity and pay in lieu of notice, by contrast, use basic pay plus the social allowance (Article 47).
