Frequently asked questions

When is a Bahraini in the private sector entitled to a pension?

When service ends on reaching 60, for men and women, with at least 180 months of contributions. Early retirement before 60 is allowed with 240 months, with a reduction set by age. The 2022 reform replaced age 55 with 60 for women.

How is the pension calculated in Bahrain?

One fiftieth (2%) of the average monthly contributory wage over the last five years, multiplied by the years of contribution. 30 years on an average of BD 1,200 gives 1,200 × 30 ÷ 50 = BD 720, or 60% of the average. Specialist sources give a cap of 80%.

How much is the early retirement reduction?

Table 1 attached to the law sets it by age at the time of the claim. Law firms publish it as 20% under 45, 15% from 45 to 49 and 10% from 50 to under 60. The calculator applies these rates as an estimate until the official table is published.

What if I have fewer than 180 months at 60?

You receive a lump sum of 15% of the average monthly wage of the last five years for each month of contribution, about 1.8 months' wages per year (Article 43). With less than one full year, only your own contributions are refunded.

Does the pension increase every year?

The 2022 reform ended the automatic 3% annual increase; any increase is now by ministerial decision after board approval. One-off 3% increases were paid for 2021 and 2022, capped at BD 30 each. A bill to restore annual increases passed the Council of Representatives in November 2025 but was not in force as of October 2026.

What are the social insurance contributions in Bahrain?

For the pension branch: 7% from the employee, and 15% from the employer in 2026, rising by 1% a year to 17% in 2028. Contributions apply to wages up to BD 4,000 a month according to specialist sources.
