Example: expected date 10 December 2026, total wage BHD 600.
Starting on the birth date: leave until 7 February 2027, back on 8 February. Pay 60 × 20 = BHD 1,200.
With the 15 unpaid days it ends on 22 February, back on 23 February. The ban on work runs until 18 January 2027.
Nursing: two hours a day from the return until 9 June 2027, then one hour until 9 December 2027.

There is no service condition, and Bahrain has no insurance branch that reimburses employers for maternity pay. The law defines the wage as basic plus allowances, so leave pay is most likely the total wage. The employer sets the timing of the nursing breaks according to the worker's circumstances and the needs of the work.

Government sector: 60 days on full salary including allowances, which may start 15 days before the birth, and two nursing hours until the child turns two. For other leave use the Bahrain leave calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How long is maternity leave in Bahrain's private sector?

60 paid days covering before and after the birth, with a medical certificate of the expected date, and the worker may add 15 unpaid days (Article 32 of Labour Law 36/2012). There is no service condition.

Has 70-day maternity leave been approved in Bahrain?

No. Parliament approved a 70-day proposal for the private sector in 2025, but the government rejected it in October 2025 and no amendment has been issued, so 60 days still applies.

How long are nursing breaks in Bahrain?

After the leave and until the child is 6 months old: two breaks of at least an hour each; then until the first birthday: two breaks of half an hour each, which may be combined and count as working time with no pay cut (Article 35).

How long is paternity leave in Bahrain?

One paid day (Article 63(b)); a proposal to raise it to 3 days has not been approved for the private sector.

Can a woman work right after giving birth in Bahrain?

She may not be employed during the 40 days after the birth (Article 32(b)), so starting leave more than 20 days before the birth pushes part of that ban past the paid days.
