Calculate the fine

Grace period after a residence visa expires or is cancelled

CategoryGrace period
Golden, Green and Blue residence holders and their families, widows and divorcees of residents, students after finishing their studies, and relatives of UAE nationals with foreign passports180 days
Skilled workers at levels 1 to 3, and property owners90 days
Residence permits issued with a guarantor or host (employees, families and domestic workers according to press reports)60 days

After the grace period, a fine of AED 50 a day applies "starting from the day following the end of the grace period", the same for residence and visit visas across all emirates since fines were unified. We found no published cap. GDRFA Dubai gives retirees 60 days, the only known difference between emirates in grace periods.

Examples:
Work residence cancelled on 1 August 2026, leaving on 15 October: last fine-free day 30 September, then 15 days × 50 = AED 750.
The same case for a retiree (30 days): last day 31 August, then 45 days × 50 = AED 2,250.
Visit visa expired on 10 September, leaving on 20 September: 10 days × 50 = AED 500.

Results are estimates and may differ by one day depending on how days are counted. A long overstay or unpaid fines can lead to referral and deportation, and a deported person can only return with permission. You can apply for a full or partial waiver of the fine. If you are leaving your job, calculate your final settlement before the visa is cancelled.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the overstay fine in the UAE?

AED 50 for each day after the grace period ends, the same amount for residence, visit and tourist visas since fines were unified, according to the ICP page updated in December 2024. No cap on the daily fine is published.

How long is the grace period after a UAE visa is cancelled?

180 days for Golden, Green and Blue residence holders and their families, widows and divorcees of residents, and students after finishing their studies; 90 days for skilled workers at levels 1 to 3 and property owners; 60 days for residence permits issued with a guarantor or host; and 30 days for all other categories.

Is there a grace period for visit visas?

No. The 10-day grace period was abolished, so the AED 50 fine starts the day after the visit visa expires.

What is the fine for renewing an Emirates ID late?

AED 20 for each day of delay, up to AED 1,000, after the permitted renewal period ends (30 days after expiry according to press reports citing ICP), plus the renewal fee of AED 100 for each year.

How much is a departure permit for overstayers?

AED 200 for the application and AED 100 in smart service fees. You must leave within 7 days of issue; otherwise a fine of AED 50 a day applies from the eighth day.

Is the airspace-closure fine waiver still in place?

No. People stranded by the airspace closure were exempted from overstay fines from 28 February 2026, and a final grace period ended on 9 July 2026. We found no general amnesty active in November 2026.
